I had only vaguely heard of the Green Arrow in passing, mainly from my husband and his friends when they got on their superhero kicks. When the CW came out with the show Arrow, my husband, Alex, tried desperately to get me to sit down and watch it with him. I didn't have any interest so I told him to watch it without me. Yet, I would find myself drawn into the story over and over again. The next thing I knew I was one of those people desperately waiting for the next season to start. That being said, I only know the story of Green Arrow/Oliver Queen from the show so I ask that any die-hard fans out there please forgive my lack of knowledge about his entire being. |
With the start of this newest season, I found it interesting/amusing that one of the bad guys in the episode made a comment about how the Green Arrow was supposed to be good at shooting his arrows. Diggle, playing the Green Arrow, was having a tough time actually hitting his targets, which coincides with the other superhero trait that Oliver has- his weapon is uniquely his. While there are other characters in the show, such as Arsenal, who have bows and arrows, the trademark is always uniquely the Green Arrow's.
Keeping with the vigilante theme, Oliver has a set definition of right and wrong, aka an ideology, and takes it upon himself to protect his city from the "bad" guys. He creates his persona, Green Arrow, to fight the corrupt powers that threaten to devour Starling City. He also faces moral dilemmas when it comes to his family because his parents were as deep in the corruption of the city as any other bad guy.
Through all this, Oliver is extremely loyal, even to the point of denial, when it comes to his friends and family. At the end of the last season, Oliver faces his demise head on in order to protect his sister, Thea, from the ultimate baddie- Raz al Ghul.
This show offers a little bit to every audience member: there is romance (between Oliver and Laurel, Oliver and Felicity, Thea and Roy, etc.), action (scenes where the Green Arrow fights the bad guys, which sometimes involves explosions and multiple chase scenes), science/technology (Arrow's toys, Felicity's computer know-how, Ray Palmer's super suit, aptly named A.T.O.M), espionage, and a number of twists in plot.
